What is Dimensional Weight (dim weight)

  • updated 3 yrs ago

Shipping carriers use dim weight to determine the amount of space a package occupies in relation to its actual weight.

UPS, FedEx, USPS now bill based on the dimensional weight or actual weight of the package - whichever is greater.

Being cognisant of dim weights help in multiple areas.

  • It can reduce shipping costs when shipments are packed more efficiently
  • Saves money on wasted shipping materials such as packing peanuts and other void fill that is used to fill empty space in a box
  • Reducing packaging can make shipments more environmentally friendly by helping lower fuel emissions as carriers can get more packages on trucks, trains and planes in less trips!

FedEx: https://pages.message.fedex.com/weight_calculator/

USPS:  Package dimensions are multiplied, Length X Width X Height.  If the result is more than 1728 cubic inches (1 Cubic Foot), divide the result by 166 to determine the Dimensional Weight (166 is the factor just for USPS)

Here is an example of how this works:

The Hat simply needs a bigger box to ship but since that takes up so much more space on a truck/plane then the carrier will charge for that space.

How Does KWF/KPS Handle Dim Weights?

Both KPS and KWF utilize various size packages allowing us multiple options to choose the best size packaging for each order.

We try to minimize void fill but it can be needed for glassware or items that are just odd shapped and we do not have the perfect size package for.

We will alwasy try to packge the item in the smallest package possible that will ensure a safe delivery and quailty experience for the customer.
